Constructing Communities – woodcut graffiti project, 2009
As an American and English citizen I have two passports. These two documents give me access to anywhere in the world, a blessing of where I was born and to whom. During my year in Indonesia I met a myriad of artists, graffiti writers, performers and more, who were talented beyond words but were locked to Indonesia by birth, unable to take their talents across the border. Constructing Communities was my small gesture in trying to grapple with these disparities. I carved portraits of my friends in Indonesia, cut them into forms and shipped them to friends in other countries, inviting them to wheat-paste these portraits within their own cities and homes. The intended message was of transporting my friends in some capacity to other cities and countries, so that their presence and influence could exist where they were unable to travel in person.
